Education in New South Wales is compulsory for all children between the ages of six years and below the minimum school leaving age of 17 years. Information about compulsory school attendance can be found here.

Education for your child is important  and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options.

Research highlights a clear correlation between student attendance and the achievement of quality academic, socio-economic and health outcomes. This research tells us that students with an attendance rate below 90% are educationally at risk.

Above 95% is our expected student attendance.

When your child misses school, they miss opportunities to:

  • Learn
  • Develop friendships
  • Build life skills

If your child is absent

On occasion, your child may need to be absent from school.

Justified reasons for student absences may include:

  • being sick, or having an infectious disease
  • having an unavoidable medical appointment
  • being required to attend a recognised religious holiday
  • exceptional or urgent family circumstance (e.g. attending a funeral)

If your child is absent:

All absences must be reported with a reason for the absence. If your child is absent, you may report it in the following ways:

  • Parents may also reply to the SMS message that is sent out each day at approximately 11am indicating your child has an unexplained absence. This response must include the reason for the absence.
  • Send an email to the school (wentworthpoint-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au). We request that this be completed by 9am on the day of an absence.
  • Students may also be sent with a note on the first day of their return to school

Parents must provide an explanation for absences to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence. Where an explanation has not been received within the 7-day timeframe, the school will record the absence as unexplained on the student's record.

Applying for Extended Leave

We understand that there are times that a student may need to take a period of extended leave for travel purposes. If your child needs to take leave of more than FIVE days, an Application for Extended Leave - Travel, must be submitted to the Principal for approval in advance. A copy of the application form can be found here

If you need help with your child's attendance

If your child is consistently showing signs of not wanting to come to school, you should contact the school and ask to speak to a member of the Wellbeing Team.

Strategies to help improve attendance may include a referral to the school’s learning and support team or linking your child with appropriate support networks. The principal may seek further support from the Home School Liaison Program to develop an Attendance Improvement Plan.
